Open VMware vSphere documentation →What VMware Workstation is
VMware Workstation is a Type 2 hypervisor that runs virtual machines on a desktop operating system (Windows or Linux). It allows you to create, run and manage multiple isolated operating systems simultaneously on a single physical machine — each with its own virtual hardware, networking and storage.
VMware Workstation Pro supports snapshots, clones, shared folders, multiple network configurations (bridged, NAT, host-only, custom), and can run nested virtualisation. It is widely used by IT professionals, developers and security researchers for testing, development and lab environments.
Why I use it
I use VMware Workstation for quick local testing when I need an isolated environment without spinning up a full Proxmox guest. It is useful for testing operating system configurations, trying software before deploying it to the lab, running security tools in an isolated network, and reproducing issues in a clean environment.
It complements the Proxmox infrastructure — Proxmox handles the production lab workloads, while VMware Workstation handles the quick, throwaway desktop testing that does not need to persist on the server hardware.
What I have done with it
- Created isolated test environments for OS configurations before deploying to Proxmox
- Used snapshot and clone features for rapid test-and-revert workflows
- Tested networking configurations in host-only and NAT modes
- Run security testing tools in isolated virtual networks
- Used nested virtualisation for testing hypervisor configurations
Why this matters
Understanding desktop virtualisation alongside server virtualisation (Proxmox) shows versatility. In a professional environment, you need both — VMware Workstation for quick local testing, and a proper hypervisor for production workloads. Knowing when to use which tool is part of practical infrastructure experience.
How to deploy or reproduce it
Install VMware Workstation through the vendor-supported package, create an isolated virtual network and build small test VMs from authorised installation media.
Use snapshots before major changes and avoid bridging vulnerable lab systems directly onto trusted networks.
