Open Transmission project →What Transmission is
Transmission is a lightweight BitTorrent client with a web interface and remote-control APIs. In a self-hosted environment it can run as a dedicated service instead of on a daily-use workstation.
Why I isolate it
I keep download activity separated from the rest of the lab so storage permissions, bandwidth, network routing and lifecycle controls are explicit. This makes the service easier to monitor, back up and stop without affecting unrelated systems.
Responsible use
I use the service only for lawful transfers such as open-source software images and content I am authorised to obtain. The site does not publish trackers, private endpoints or current download paths.
Operational focus
- Dedicated incomplete and completed directories
- Correct user and group ownership on shared storage
- Bandwidth and schedule controls
- Private web access and strong authentication
- Optional policy routing through an approved VPN path
- Monitoring disk capacity and stalled jobs
